Kraken the ship against the waves

Acrylic on canvas
2015

Over Christmas I was given a bottle of a famous spiced rum brand which features a picture of a giant squid on the box and bottle. After staring at the box and the bottle for a few hours while drinking the rummy goodness I became obsessed with the picture of the giant squid staring back at me. I set about painting, I wanted to keep the traditional Japanese waves that I’ve used previously as well as the block colours which seem to plague my palette. I hoped that would really make the squid stand out while allowing almost static movement.

I feel that there are two depths to the picture, I see different things when viewing it from close or at distance. I achieved this by adding small sections of extreme details such as the pirates on the ship or the suckers on the squid. I think given more time and patience I could have added a lot more detail but I’ll leave this for now as I’ve sobered up a lot and have a lot more paintings to do.

Enjoy Enjoy.
